Peter Damien Jones - Artist
I have been making art on. off my whole life. I started in preparatory school and ended up at university where I graduated with a BA(Hons) in Drama and European Cultures. Music, imagery, performing and creating have been second nature to me. Most of my work has been in the ephemeral arts on stage in Melbourne, Australia and Basel, Switzerland. Recently I have again returned to the visual arts. I continue to write poetry.
I grew up in Preston in the Latin Quarter of Melbourne., the Northern suburbs. I was imbued with an Irish Catholic culture tinged with a smidgen of crypto-judaism.
I have been in live bands playing jazz and country music, written heaps of poetry. I've been published in 9-2-5 poetry magazine and an anthology, as well as in numerous student newspapers over the years.

I have performed in, and created plays in both Melbourne and Basel.
These days I am mainly working on soundscapes in the ambient music genre. I also paint and write poetry and hope to have an installation of my work in the not too distant future.
My visual art is a revisiting of my childhood.
My work is a response tot he environment I inhabit. Imbued with philosophy my creations tend to be a mixture the quirky and the brash.

Coming from a large extended working-class family with roots in the 18thC convict and free settlers of the 19thC, my outlook is radically modern.

I have never felt 100% at home in this country. It is stolen land and I look forward to a treaty with the indigenous people of this country. Nevertheless, I class myself as a native of this harsh land made hospitable only through the wholesale destruction of its environmental heritage.

What I create reflects this sensibility. I'm not sure exactly how, but somewhere between the darkness and the light, there is a space where we as humans continue to generate life and its after-effect, culture.
It is at this intersection that I choose to live and create, at that space where nothing is possible.
